The tree grows extremely slowly and can live for several centuries; due to climate change, overgrazing, and a lack of natural regeneration, the species is now considered endangered. Besides Dracaena cinnabari, several palm species of the genus Daemonorops in Southeast Asia, as well as the South American tree Croton lechleri, yield similarly red-coloured resins also traded under the name "dragon's blood," though botanically unrelated to the Socotra species.

Dragon's blood has been traded since antiquity along the incense routes and was valued by the Greeks and Romans as a varnish, medicine, and red dye — Pliny the Elder already mentions the "blood of dragons" in his Natural History. In medieval European alchemy and folk magic, it was considered a powerful agent of protection and cleansing against negative influences, used in rituals of banishing; in Chinese tradition it has also long served as a dye for lacquers and in the treatment of wounds in traditional medicine. This use as a powerful agent of protection and cleansing has carried through to the present across various spiritual traditions worldwide, from Western ritual magic to Latin American folk healing practices. The resin was also used for centuries in traditional dentistry and wound treatment, credited with styptic and anti-inflammatory properties. Due to its rarity and the protected status of the trees, Socotra dragon's blood remains today one of the most expensive resins in the international incense trade.

Burned, dragon's blood releases a warm, sweet, deep, faintly spicy-woody resinous scent, more intense and darker than many other resins. It is said to amplify the effect of other incense materials in blends, which is why it is traditionally added to other resins only in small amounts. It is closely associated with protection, courage, and the banishing of negative energy, and is considered by many to be one of the most powerful incense resins of all — a scent meant to convey presence and resolve. In modern incense practice it is often burned only in tiny amounts at the start of a ritual, symbolically "activating" the smoke of other materials and lending them added potency.

Used in the following concerts

        Incense of Music 41

12 October 2019

Hayden Chisholm, Chris Dahlgren, Daniel Schröteler, Gareth Lubbe, Ziad Rajab — Hyssop, Dragon's Blood

Dragon’s Blood (Dracaena cinnabari) Dragon’s blood is a bright red resin that can come from several botanically unrelated plant genera, […]
