The tree is endemic to central Chile, occurring between 33° and 40° southern latitude, where it forms a characteristic part of the region's sclerophyllous forest alongside other native trees. Its leaves carry a strong, woody, slightly bitter flavor and a camphor-like aroma; its name is believed to derive from Mapudungun, the language of the Mapuche people. Botanically, Peumus boldus is also considered a relict endemic — a survivor of a once more widespread plant family that, through past climatic change, retreated to its present, narrowly confined range in Chile.

Boldo is a staple of folk medicine across much of South America — Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Brazil — used in both urban and rural households, traditionally for liver and gallbladder complaints and to support digestion; dried boldo tea remains a common product on South American supermarket shelves today. The leaves are used similarly to bay leaves in cooking and are commonly added to yerba mate or other teas to moderate their flavor; many families keep a boldo plant at home for this purpose. Because the plant's essential oil contains a high concentration of ascaridole, a compound that can be toxic in large amounts, boldo has traditionally always been used sparingly.

Burned as incense, boldo releases a woody, camphor-like, slightly bitter scent. It is traditionally associated with inner clarity and calm, in keeping with its long history as a gentle folk remedy across South America. Boldine, the alkaloid found in its leaves, continues to be studied pharmacologically for potential liver-protective properties, and dried boldo leaves are now also exported as a commercial commodity to the health food markets of Europe and North America. As incense, boldo is thus a somewhat unusual guest, its camphor-like note recalling medicinal herbs more than classic frankincense or floral aromas. Boldo thus stands as an example of the many lesser-known South American medicinal plants only recently being discovered as incense outside their homeland as well. Boldo thus remains a modest but effective ambassador of South American incense tradition.

Used in the following concerts

        Incense of Music 33

19 April 2019

Manlio Maresca, Eldar Tsalikov, Igor Spallati, Ugo Alunni — Peumus Boldus, Sandalwood

Boldo (Peumus boldus) Peumus boldus, commonly known as boldo, is the sole species in the genus Peumus, part of the […]
