The tree is endemic to central Chile, occurring between 33° and 40° southern latitude, where it forms a characteristic part of the region's sclerophyllous forest alongside other native trees. Its leaves carry a strong, woody, slightly bitter flavor and a camphor-like aroma.

Boldo is a staple of folk medicine across much of South America — Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Brazil — used in both urban and rural households. Unlike most aromatic woods, it retains its fragrance for decades. The trees are hemiparasitic — related to European mistletoe — and require at least 15 years to develop commercially valuable, fragrance-rich heartwood. The best-known species are Indian sandalwood (Santalum album) and Australian sandalwood (Santalum spicatum), native to India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Australia, Indonesia, and other Pacific regions.

Sandalwood ranks among the most sacred substances across numerous world religions. In Hinduism and Ayurveda it is considered holy and associated with Shiva and the goddess Lakshmi; ground into a paste (chandanam), it is central to rituals, temple worship, and meditation, and is applied to devotees' foreheads and necks. In Jainism, sandalwood paste accompanies daily worship and cremation ceremonies. In Buddhism its scent is believed to support alertness during meditation and is among the most popular incense offered to the Buddha, a use echoed in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean traditions. Zoroastrians place sandalwood twigs into the sacred fire of their temples to keep it burning.

Burned, sandalwood releases a soft, warm, creamy, woody scent of great persistence.
